EFTPOS Failure? Don't Mess With Christmas !

NZ is the most EFTPOS (credit / debit card) dependent country in the world... a much higher % of purchases are done by this means (rather than cash or check) than anywhere else ... Years ago it was suggested that real time analysis of the NZ economy could be achieved by monitoring the transactions over the EFTPOS network!

It will be interesting to see if there is a social backlash overthis as there has been some controversy lately over the increasing Australian Bank influence on the New Zealand Banking and Payment markets.

BT Technology Timeline 2006 to 2051

BT's futurology department has predicted a broad sweep of future innovation including expected advances in artificial intelligence, health, medical, business, education, energy, robotics, space, telecommunications, transport and travel.

A couple of interesting ... if off base in my opinion... future events:

2006: space exploration creates superbug
2015: self-aware machine intelligence

Regardless, there are many thought provoking prognostications here... we'll worth more than just a casual look!

Googling Your Brain

"Researchers analyzed brain scans of people as the test subjects watched pictures on a cmputer screen. The images were divided into three categories: celebrities, places, and everyday objects like tweezers and a pocket mirror.

Later, without any images and while their brains were still being scanned, the subjects were asked to recall as many of the images as they could. The researchers found that the patterns of brain activity associated with each picture "reinstated" themselves seconds before the people could verbally recall the memories.

On average, the time between beginning brain activity associated with the memory and the subjects verbally stating the memory was about 5.4 seconds.

A Mob is a Mob... smart just makes it hurt more

I'll have something to say about the cybernetics of the situation in future posts... for now its just interesting to note that in France, and now in Australia ,there is evidence that text messaging technology is being used to overcome the balance that was formerly in place where the technology of better communications allowed "the few" police to mark "the many" ....

Event Stream Processing Blog

Mark Palmer has created a web site that is a portal of sort into the world of Event Stream Processing. It includes descriptions of some of the various vendors approaches to ESP and CEP (Complex Event Processing) as well as having links to other web sites and resources on the web:

Index of Event Stream Processing Resources

Stream Joins vs State Machines

SquareBlog: "stream joins vs. state machines vs. table-o-state vs. MechaGodzilla"

Hans Glide writes: "I recently looked at using many event processing engines, which I?m starting to write about here. I found the following use case to be interesting in terms of revealing features of the products and sparking discussion." ....

This piece is one of the few pieces posted with a user perspective of features in event processing engines... a good place to start to see how vendors might be approaching the problem of feature set in a field still not fully defined.

Rules Engines vs Stream Processors

SquareBlog: "Rules Engines vs. Stream Processing Engines"

Hans Glide writes "Stream processing engines sort of took me by surprise. I was following the development of JSR94 and all the spiffy rules engines, and I didn't even realize that there's a whole other category of software for processing streams of data."

There are many vendors of stream event processing starting to appear... in many ways they are picking the low hanging fruit of the complex event processing field... but they are never-the-less real functioning applications and are a taste of things to come in the full blown CEP world.

BAM Providers As Online Banking Fraud Preventers

07/26/2004By David Luckham, Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering, Stanford UniversityHere's a problem BAM tools should be able to handle fairly soon if the BAM industry continues to develop more powerful event processing capabilities.

RFID Gazette: Complex Event Processing

Complex Event Processing: EPCGlobal has set up the Software Action Group in order to arrive at the standard interfaces that will be used for the distribution of RFID-generated information among the various applications in a company. Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a technique that allows for the transformation of raw EPC data into actionable information.
